Konnyaku is a traditional jelly-like Japanese health food which is made from konnyaku root. It does not contain many calories, fats and is rich in fiber. There are two different types available: white and black. The product can be used in soups stewes, oden etc. Konnyaku should be parboiled before adding to a recipe though to remove extra lime and make the texture more chewy.
Konnyaku has a unique jelly-like texture without any particular taste – the taste of other foods gets sucked into it while cooking. The product is also great for those wanting to lose weight as there are practically no calories included. Starch from the same plant is contained in Japanese shirataki noodles as well.
